Responsibilities

We are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team that has a unique passion for spearheading the development of new and disruptive technologies that can advance the benefits of automation and robotics. You will have the opportunity not to only solve difficult problems but ideate and identify the new challenges that automation and robotics may solve. As the resource of the “physical” realm of products and as a Mechanical Engineer you will ensure that we can create the right experience for our customers as they physically interact with what we make.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research and key component selection including sensors, actuators, controllers, and any other relevant components to achieve automation targets and functions
  • Lead designs for automation efforts focused on cost and scalability for our Portfolio Companies
  • Ability to perform detailed thermal and structural analysis of complex mechanical systems. Use appropriate FEA, CFD tools to accomplish analysis in a manner that supports rapid virtual prototyping to help accelerate development timelines
  • Provide leadership in the execution of prototyping, engineering validation builds, and production ramp for different automation applications that our company supports
  • Scope and support DOEs (design of experiments) necessary for design testing, verification, and validation
  • Architect structures and mechanisms from low to high kinematic complexity for robotic applications
  • Prepare weight budgets, cost estimations, and margin of safety analysis based on use cases defined by system requirements
  • Mechanical packaging of components with an eye for efficiency and design elegance. Perform tolerance analysis as required to ensure intended assembly performance
  • CAD design of mechanical systems guided by load and duty-cycle analysis, kinematics studies and manufacturability. Prepare detailed drawings of parts and assemblies for those mechanical systems
  • Expert Knowledge of Geometric Tolerancing ASME Y14.5, DFM (Design for Manufacturing), DFA (Design for Assembly), Mil Specs, surface coatings & finishing standards
  • Compile data, prepare trade studies, and present information in written and verbal form
  • Develop mechanical system budgets including estimating labor, material, and any other relevant costs
  • Has in-depth understanding and experience using a wide variety of manufacturing processes as they relate to low and high-volume production
  • Switch effectively and efficiently from R&D to product execution and manufacturing

    • Creativity/Innovation: Knows how to apply existing technologies to new challenges, idea generator with a proper appetite for risk balanced with execution, innovates when solutions resist common knowledge or conventional solutions, drives creativity across projects and team
    • Adaptability/Flexibility: Comfortable in high ambiguity environments, iterates and adapts, knows when and where to course correct based on changing inputs, a calming force under duress and pressure situations
  • Must-have Skills / Qualification:
    • BS or MS Degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or other relevant educational backgrounds
    • 8 – 15 years of industrial experience successfully developing robotic / automation systems
    • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills to levels above, below, and in-line
    • In-depth robot/automation hardware design experience with both system-level thinking and component-level development
    • Experience with FEA, and/or CFD, and/or surfacing
    • Experience using composites, and understanding and applying of properties of materials
    • Experience (physically) building and maintaining complex mechanical systems
    • Keen ability to identify and foresee technical risk, and engineering mindset of addressing risks early
    • Assist in the creation of an Integrated Master Schedule and Work Breakdown Structure in collaboration with product managers
    • Expert ability to balance multiple projects, and support operations personnel and fabricators as issues arise during the build.
    • Drive to grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to product development of automation systems
    • Ability to guide, coach, and grow entry-level engineers
